I’ve been thinking about the relationship between art and money for the majority of my life. In fact, I was going to write my next Substack piece about that.
But then I started thinking about what I actually want this Substack to be. I hadn’t really thought about it past my first post. I just knew I wanted to do something cool with it—something different.
So, I'm going to publish my new novel, The City Is My Mistress, right here—serially, chapter by chapter, as I write it.
When the book is complete, I’ll archive the chapters and publish it in both print and eBook formats.
The first chapter of The City Is My Mistress will drop on August 14, with new chapters released every week.
The first five chapters will be available to all readers.
Chapters 6 and beyond will be available to subscribers only.
It’s free to subscribe. I have no intention of ever monetizing this Substack, so feel free to share it. You’re not part of a literary Ponzi scheme—just a reader following along.
The best way to support the project (if you end up liking it) will be to buy the book when it’s ready. Pre-orders will be announced later.
Each chapter will be short and digestible—most under 2,000 words. Some may stretch to 2,500. A few will be very short. But they’ll all move.
You’ll be reading the novel as it’s being written. I don’t know how many chapters there will be—but we’ll find out together. You can follow along weekly or binge at your own pace.
Until then, I hope it’s a cool ride for anyone who wants to come along.
Thanks for reading.
